1. 研究目的与意义

With the deepening ofglobalization, the cultural exchanges between China and the West have beenincreasing, and western translation theories have been particularly prevalentin China, among which the Skopos theory is gradually known and extensively usedby translators because of its practicality. In recent years, foreign film andTV series resources are readily available, especially under the influence ofthe Internet. Compared with the unrelenting development of E-C subtitle translation,although more and more excellent Chinese movies and TV series have becomeinternationalized, the C-E subtitle translation is still immature. Its introductionto the international market is inseparable from the subtitle translationthrough which many culture-loaded words can show aplenty Chinese culturalelements.

Based on the Skopos theory, this paperanalyzes the culture-loaded words in the subtitle of The Story of Minglan,so as to seek appropriate translation methods and skills. The significance ofthe study is as follows.

In the first place,translators are freer to translate and adopt multifarious translationstrategies from the perspective of the Skopos theory. With regard to obscureculture-loaded words, such as sayings and idioms, translators can employ free translation,literal translation and subtraction translation strategies to preserve Chinesecultural elements and make them easier for the audience to understand.

Research contents:To find out the appropriatesubtitle translation methods and skills of TV series under Skopos theory, andfinally make the foreign countries better accept the Chinese culture conveyedby the TV series, especially costume dramas.

The keyissue to be solved: In recent years, although the research on the translationof Chinese culture-loaded words has received sufficient attention, the level oftranslation works varies due to the lack of systematic translation theories indomestic translation. Its necessity and diversity bring the difficulties to thecultural communication.

The following reviews the key literature concerned with the Skopostheory and subtitle translation. Sources are from the online library of theuniversity of Nanjing University of Finance and Economics, Wanfang Database,CNKI and China Science and Technology Journal Database with the key words suchas Skopos theory, subtitle translation and translationstrategies.

1.Studies on Skopos theory home and abroad

Hans J. Vermeer, theGerman translation theorist, established the Skopos theory which proposed that translationis an act with a clear purpose, which determines thetranslation strategy. From the perspective of this theory, translation is a kindof behavior, whose primary principle – the skopos rule makes translatorsconsider the purpose of translation when conducting translation activities(Zhang Min, 2021).The fidelity rule and the coherence rule are the other two principles. Fidelityrule requires that the translation be faithful to the source text, but thetranslation need not be word-for-word equivalent to the original. The coherencerule requires that the translated text should be fluent, and the expressionhabit of the translated text should conform to the target language and bemeaningful in the communicative environment of the target language(LiChangshuan, 2008).
