The Handmaid’s Tale ，as the 'Queen of Canadian Literature' Margaret Atwood’smost famous novel， has becomea feminist landmark. The novel was published in 1985 in Canada, but over thelast several years it has had a massive resurgence in popularity with contemporaryreaders and television audiences. What’s more, The Handmaid’s Tale is one ofthe best dystopian/speculative fiction novels ever written.
About the theory,existential feminism is a main branch of the first wave of feminist movementand an important source of post-modern feminism. Existential feminism not onlyhelps understand the female theme of The Handmaid’s Tale, but also reveals theprofound social backgrounds and meaning of the works. Simone de Beauvoir is animportant feminist. Even in today, lots of her works still have wide and deepinfluence around the world. She finished many great works. Especially the greatfeminist writing The Second Sex conveys her existentialism feminism and herspecial thinking about women life as the other. It is a cornerstone works offeminist philosophy and the second wave feminist movement. It’s still read andstudied to this day as an essential manifesto on women’s oppression andliberation.
Taken within the context of the feminist movement, it opened the wayfor the consciousness-raising that characterized second-wave feminism; itvalidated women’s experiences of injustice. What from an existential phenomenological perspective was a detailedanalysis of the lived body, and an ethical and political indictment of the waysthat patriarchy alienated women from their embodied capacities, was, from afeminist perspective, an appeal that called on women to take up the politics ofliberation.

Because of her wide range of subjects, diverse styles anddistinctive creative features, she is known as the 'Queen of CanadianLiterature' and in 2019 won the British literary world''''s highest awardBooker Prize. In 1985, Margaret Atwood published her classic ———The Handmaid’sTale. Atwood uses the fictional story to convey her dissatisfaction andcriticism of the status quo of women''''s existence, as well as her desire forwomen''''s freedom and equality.

The Second Sex is a cornerstone worksof feminist philosophy and the second wave feminist movement. It’s still readand studied to this day as an essential manifesto on women’s oppression andliberation. However, the limitation of Beauvoir''''s Second Sex is that it affirmsthe rights of women, but it does not affirm the rights of women as women, sofrom this point of view it needs to rise to a higher stage, that is, women''''ssocial liberation, as Beauvoir saw, women only face up to their naturaldifferences with men, face up to the existence of women, and demand theestablishment of female values, rather than the values brought about bypatriarchal culture.
Although Beauvoir''''s description ofthe reasons for the formation and development of women''''s 'other'status in Second Sex and a series of other works are thorough, it is tooradical in the way women get out of this predicament. In a way, Beauvoiremphasizes that women and men are equally transcendental, are'self-contained existence' at the same time, but ignored thecharacteristics of women themselves, it seems that women out of their own'inner sex', her 'return to self-subjectivity' road hasbecome a woman 'return to a male identity' road.
